      A NEWSLETTER FOR CHRISTIANS

God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it... John 3:17

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITOR’S NOTE –

Some have asked me why I started this newsletter, so here it is! I was Saved in 1966 and immediately went to Bible School for two years while working and raising three small children, of course my helpmate (wife) helped me through those years by giving up a lot of evenings when we could have been together. After many years in the church I came to realize that many Christians did not have an understanding of the basic fundamentals of their faith. People didn’t really know why or what they believed.

So the thought came to me about putting together an easy to read newsletter for all denominations containing serious articles as well as jokes, history, archeology, and anything else that may be used to further a Christian’s knowledge concerning the Christian life. Then I prayed about it and God lead me to start this newsletter with 35 readers in 2003. I didn’t know where the finances would come from but during prayer I felt God’s assurance. I was to publish at a printer and mail it by first class mail. This really got expensive when we were sending out over 200 a month but then the thought of e-mailing as many as I could helped to defray the cost of the printer and stamps. We now mail approximately 60 newsletters by first class mail and we are approaching 2500 e-mails each month. The cost of setting up the newsletter to be sent by e-mail is only $10.00 a month and the postage and printing approximately $56.00 a month. Some months are very tight but we have always made it somehow. God is good!  Fred

FRED’S VIEW -  GIVE UP ON HIM?

Back in the 70’s I was involved with many kids in the Youth Group and Sunday School. Recently the Lord impressed on me the name of a young man who seemed to always make the wrong decisions. At age 12 he was involved in drugs and cutting school. He lived with his older brother and younger sister in their elderly grandmother’s home. The parents had abandoned them and had left them with this sweet old lady to care for them.

It was a Sunday afternoon when I received a call from Grandma saying that she had found a plastic packet of what she thought was marijuana in the 12 year old’s sock drawer. I drove around all Sunday afternoon looking for a friend who was a detective to see what exactly was in the packet. It was marijuana. Then the confrontation and of course the denial.

This incident and a few others prompted Grandma to ask for my help in getting him placed in a foster home. I met with school counselors and Social Services over the course of a few weeks. He was placed in a good Christian home far away from his friends and other bad influences. He continued on a downward trend and eventually ended up in jail.

Because of my involvement my family was harassed by the older brother for having his brother taken away. I would receive phone calls at 2am telling me that my house was going to blow up before morning or that my two little daughters would be beaten and raped. The older brother ended up in jail also for many years. I have lost track but when I think of them I pray for their safety and Salvation.

Should we give up on them? What’s the use? They aren’t worth the trouble! I wonder how many times God could have answered “yes” to those questions when He looked at the mess I had made of things? He love you and me in spite of ourselves! He even made a way out for me – JESUS!

Never give up on anyone. God loves them to much. As long as there is breath in a body there is hope! Thank you Lord for not giving up on me! Fred

Pastor's Business Card

A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door.

Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in the door.

When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10.'

Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'

Didache

From the Greek "didoskolos" meaning "teacher." The Didache (pronounced did-a-kay). It was possibly written around 65-80 A.D. and is supposed to be what the twelve apostles taught to the Gentiles concerning life and death, church order, fasting, baptism, prayer, etc. There is debate as to its authenticity. The work is cited by Eusebius who lived from 260-341 and Athanasius (293-373). The Didache is not inspired, but is valuable as an early church document.

Demon

A fallen angel that assists Satan in the opposition of God. Demons are evil (Luke 10:17,18), powerful (Luke 8:29), and under the power of Satan (Matt. 12:24-30). They recognized Christ (Mark 1:23,24) and can possess non-Christians (Matt. 8:29).

Assurance

Theologically, assurance is the state of being confident in a condition or outcome. Usually it is applied to one’s assurance of salvation. Texts often used to support assurance of salvation are John 10:28 “and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand,” and 1 John 5:13, “These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, in order that you may know that you have eternal life.” This assurance is given by the Holy Spirit.

TYPES OF CULTS

· Eastern Mystical: groups related to Hinduism, Buddhism and other pantheistic Eastern religions; examples in this category are Hare Krishna’s and Self-Realization Fellowship.

· Aberrant Christian: groups that claim to be Bible-based but which deviate in practice or belief, such as The Way International, the Boston Church of Christ and the Shepherding Movement.

Cities of refuge

Six cities that were designated by Moses at the command of God as locations to which Israelites could flee in order to be safe from retribution of other Israelites for offenses committed against others. Num. 35:9-16 gives a description of their purpose. In that culture the responsibility of retribution against a family member who had been killed or seriously injured rested on the "goel," the next of kin. The person was required to stay in the city until the death of the High Priest of that city (Num. 35:25-28). Then he was free to return to his home and retribution was not allowed upon him.

 Born Again

The new birth enjoyed by a Christian upon his conversion and regeneration. It is a work of the Holy Spirit within a believer. It is related to faith in Christ and Him crucified (John 3:3-5). It means that the person is no longer dead in sins (Eph. 2:1), no longer spiritually blind (1 Cor. 2:14), and is now a new creation in Christ Jesus (2 Cor. 5:17).

Autograph

An original writing of a biblical document. The original manuscript written. The autographs would be the actual, original written document from which copies are made.

Is It Right?

Cowardice asks the question ‘Is it safe?’

Expediency asks the question ‘Is it politic?’

And Vanity comes along and asks the question ‘Is it popular?’

But Conscience asks the question ‘Is it right?’

And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but he must do it because Conscience tells him it is right. ~Martin Luther King~

What is the hypostatic union? How can Jesus be both God and man at the same time?

The hypostatic union is the term used to describe how God the Son, Jesus Christ, took on a human nature, yet remained fully God at the same time. Jesus always had been God (John 8:58; 10:30), but at the incarnation Jesus took on human flesh - He became a human being (John 1:14). The addition of the human nature to the divine nature is Jesus, the God-man. This is the hypostatic union, Jesus Christ, one Person, fully God and fully man.

Jesus' two natures, human and divine, are inseparable. Jesus will forever be the God-man, fully God and fully human, two distinct natures in one Person. Jesus' humanity and divinity are not mixed, but are united without loss of separate identity. Jesus sometimes operated with the limitations of humanity (John 4:6; 19:28) and other times in the power of His deity (John 11:43; Matthew 14:18-21). In both, Jesus' actions were from His one Person. Jesus had two natures, but only one person or personality.

The doctrine of the hypostatic union is an attempt to explain how Jesus could be both God and man at the same time. It is ultimately, though, a doctrine that we are incapable of fully understanding. It is impossible for us to fully understand how God works. We, as finite human beings, should not expect to be able to comprehend an infinite God. Jesus is God’s Son in that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35). But that does not mean Jesus did not exist before He was conceived. Jesus always has existed (John 8:58; 10:30). When Jesus was conceived, He became a human being in addition to being God (John 1:1,14).

Jesus is both God and man. Jesus has always been God, but He did not become a human being until He was conceived in Mary. Jesus became a human being so that He could identify with us in our struggles (Hebrews 2:17) and, more importantly, so that He could die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Philippians 2:5-11). In summary, the hypostatic union teaches that Jesus is both fully human and fully divine, that there is no mixture or dilution of either nature, and that He is one united Person, forever.

ONLY WAY

Jesus is the only way of salvation because He is the only One who can pay our sin penalty (Romans 6:23). No other religion teaches the depth or seriousness of sin and its consequences. No other religion offers the infinite payment of sin that only Jesus Christ could provide. No other “religious founder” was God become man (John 1:1,14) – the only way an infinite debt could be paid. Jesus had to be God so that He could pay our debt. Jesus had to be man so He could die. Salvation is available only through faith in Jesus Christ! “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

Evolution?

If evolution is this grand process that has transformed the simplest life into people, it should surely be demonstrable in the laboratory. In fact, extended experiments with fruit flies have produced many types of deformed fruit flies, but they remain fruit flies. Evolutionists will point to the large amount of time needed for evolution to work, but on the order of 10,000 generations of fruit flies have been bred and exposed to many times a naturally-occurring amount of mutation-inducing radiation, with no indication that any type of increase in complexity (upward evolution) is happening! These experiments show (like plant and animal breeding) that organisms have a certain capacity for change which cannot be exceeded.

FRED’S VIEW -   God’s Peace!

During the course of our lives many things happen to us and to those around us. Some of these things are not very nice and we can be under much stress many times. I have recently gone through a very tough time trying to raise a 16 year old granddaughter by myself. I am 73 years old and not really attuned to everything a teenager wants or needs so there are many times of stress while I am trying to do what is best for her. I don’t always succeed.

I’m sure everyone reading this can relate to some sort of stress in their lives, even when we are doing our best but I can truly say before God and man that His Peace is there to comfort me all the time. My reaction to stress before I was Saved was to ‘jump’ into a bottle of alcohol to calm my stress but after the hangover the problem was still there and sometimes was made worse because of my drinking.

How do we receive this “Peace” from God? This is only achieved by intense prayer with the earnest desire to transfer our burdens into God’s hands. If we truly give our cares to Jesus instead of worrying over them we will experience the peace that only God can give. After this transfer of our cares into His hands we must rely on our faith in God to do what He says He will do. Is God a liar, of course not, all He asks is for us to trust His Word. Philippians 4:6,7. Fred

Differently

A study of a group of elderly people 95 and older were asked the question,

“What would you do differently if you had your life to live over?”

The central theme of all of the responses was, “I would have done more with my life.”

The three most common answers:

I would have thought more

I would have risked more

I would have done more things that would live on after I die.

Improvement

A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story.

From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again.

Finally she spoke up, "Grandpa, did God make you?"

"Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago."

"Oh," she paused, "Grandpa, did God make me too?"

"Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a little while ago."

Feeling their respective faces again, she observed,

"God's getting better at it, isn't he?

The Bible's uniqueness and unity.

The Bible was written by over 40 authors who came from just about every walk of life conceivable, including fisherman, kings, a butler, priests, and a tax collector. The 66 books of the Bible were written over a 1,500 year span in three languages on three continents with one theme and no contradictions. C.J. Sharp captures this miracle well:

"If a fragment of stone were found in Italy, another in Asia Minor, another in Greece, another in Egypt, and on and on until sixty-six fragments had been found, and if when put together they fitted perfectly together, making a perfect statue of Venus de Milo, there is not an artist or scientist but would arrive immediately at the conclusion that there was originally a sculptor who conceived and carved the statue. The very lines and perfections would probably determine which of the great ancient artists carved the statue. Not only the unity of the Scriptures, but their lines of perfection, suggest One far above any human as the real author. That could be no one but God!

New Dead Sea Scroll Fragments

There is only one place on earth where an unending stream of evidence substantiating the Bible is discovered year after year. Granted, it’s been 40 years since the major discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls thrilled biblical archaeologists and others who love the Word of God.

The latest discovery—two small fragments of animal skin, brown with age, with Leviticus 23:38-39 and 43-44 inscribed in ancient Hebrew—are now in the hands of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). How they got there is an intriguing story in itself. About a year ago, Professor
Chanan Eshel, an archaeologist at Bar Ilan University in Tel Aviv, was summoned to an abandoned police station near the Dead Sea for a clandestine meeting with a Bedouin Arab. After explaining that he’d been offered $20,000 on the black market, the man asked Eshel to evaluate the fragments. It would be hard to describe the emotions that surged through the professor’s heart as he examined the skins. “I was jealous that he had found them instead of me,” said Eshel, who has worked in the Judean Desert for nearly 20 years. “I was also very excited, though I didn’t believe I would ever see them again.” Months later, after learning that the fragments had not left the country, Eshel bought them with $3,000 provided by Bar Ilan. The skins were turned over to the IAA, which is now testing them for authenticity. They are the 15th find in this area and date to the Second Revolt against the Romans under Bar-Kochba.

The discovery sparked renewed hope among biblical archaeologists that the Judean Desert has much yet to yield. “No scrolls have been found in the Judean Desert since 1965,” said Eshel. “This [find] encourages scholars to believe that if they bother to excavate, survey and climb, they will still find things in the Judean Desert. The common perception has been that there is nothing left to find there, but that is clearly wrong.”
From “Israel Today” magazine.

John

The writer of the gospel of John was obviously an eyewitness of the events of Christ's life since he speaks from a perspective of having been there during many of the events of Jesus' ministry and displays a good knowledge of Israeli geography and customs.
The John Rylands papyrus fragment 52 of John's gospel dated in the year 125-135 contains portions of John 18, verses 31-33,37-38.  This fragment was found in Egypt.  It is the last of the gospels and appears to have been written in the 80's to 90's.  Most scholars say it was written in the early 90's.  This means that the time span between the original writing of John and its earliest copy (fragment) is approximately 35-45 years.
Of important note is the lack of mention of the destruction of the Jewish temple in 70 A.D.  But this is understandable since John was not focusing on historical events and was most probably written 20 or so years after the destruction of the Temple.  John focused on the theological aspect of the person of Christ and listed His miracles and words that affirmed Christ's deity.  Though there is still some debate on the dates of when the gospels were written, they were most assuredly completed before the close of the first century and written by eyewitnesses or under the direction of eyewitnesses.

Does God Always Heal?  by Walter Martin

Certainly, healing for the body is a benefit of Christ's death on the cross, a benefit for the church as a result of His atoning sacrifice. However, it is not -- it has never been in the history of the church -- a guarantee that God has to heal your body; He doesn't have to!

God does say He will graciously entertain our prayers. He says that if we exercise faith, and if our request is in accordance with His will, He will hear us. But He never said that the mark of true spirituality is that you would never sneeze.

Some within the church will try to tell you, "God's perfect will is that you are never going to be sick." Well, I'll tell you something: there are certain lessons -- if you are honest -- that you'll admit you never would have learned unless the Lord flattened you out long enough to get your attention. Sometimes God teaches us things through our suffering.

Moreover, I must say that sometimes a person, after praying for a healing, may receive a no from God -- a benevolent no, a kindly no, a protective no maybe, but no nevertheless. Tragically, however, there are teachers -- in the Faith movement, for example -- who have the colossal gall to tell people that if they were more spiritual, if they had more faith, if they believed like they believed, they would be well. Such faulty teaching can crush whatever faith these poor people have.

Now, I believe you should go to the Lord and believe Him for healing, and trust Him for healing, and pursue Him for healing. And I believe you should search your soul to make certain there is nothing in your life standing in the way of healing. But you must come to Him and lay yourself out on His conditions. The Scripture says, "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us" (1 John 5:14). If perhaps God intends to teach you something through an illness, He might not heal you immediately.

So don't think you are being neglected by the Holy Spirit if you don't get healed. Don't assume that the Lord is against you. Don't conclude that you necessarily have an absence of faith or secret sin.

Take a good look at 1 Peter 2:21: "Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps." Circle the word example in this verse. Here we are told that Jesus suffered. And He left us an example. We are to follow in His steps.

And what is the meaning of Philippians 3:10, which refers to "the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings"? Let us be clear on this: suffering is an integral part of the fact of life, and is often used by God in the development and maturation of the Christian.

The apostle Paul had a greater standing with the Lord in terms of his ministry than I have or anybody else has ever had. According to 2 Corinthians 12:1-10 Paul requested healing from the Lord three times. And three times he got an answer back: "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Translation: God said no to Paul's request for healing. And God had a purpose in saying no.

Did Paul have lack of faith? Rubbish! Was Paul suffering from some secret sin that he was carrying around? Do you see how utterly absurd this is? Do you see how it plays on people's emotions and lives? Do you see how it undermines faith in the absolute authority of Scripture and transfers it to a human being whose experience becomes the criteria? FRED’S VIEW –  Ever feel Guilty?

When my wife went to be with the Lord in 2004 I was approached by a well meaning friend who asked me whether after all those years together (49) I thought about things from our past that I felt guilty about. I could not answer right away because the thought of guilt never crossed my mind.

As I pondered this question in the days after the funeral I realized that there was a time when I would have looked back at my mistakes and felt quilt on many an occasion but for many years it never crossed my mind because when I came to the Lord in April 1966 and was Born Again as a new creation of God the Holy Spirit opened my mind to not look back on my old self because that was under the Blood of Jesus. If I brought it up then I would say that the Blood of Christ didn’t do the whole job! Now I was free from my past and able to receive forgiveness for any future mistakes. All we have to do to receive this forgiveness is repent of our sin and ask God through His Son Jesus Christ to forgive us and He will. Of course our heart must be right with the Lord for this to happen otherwise we are just fooling ourselves because the sin we have repented of will return to torment us.

Always remember God knows our hearts and our motives. He knows when we really mean something and when we are just being “religious.”  Fred

Malachi 3:3 says “He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver”

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible study.

That week the woman called a silversmith and didn’t mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a spot; then she thought again about the verse that says “ He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver” She asked the silversmith if is was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time silver is being refined.

The man answered yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment.

Then she asked the silversmith, “How do you know the silver is fully refined?”

He smiled at her and answered “Oh, that’s easy, when I see my image it”

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire.

REMEMBER That God has his eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you

Soap and Water

A minister was asked to dinner by one of his church members. He knew she was a bad housekeeper but agreed. When he sat down at the table, he noticed that the dishes were the dirtiest that he had ever seen in his life. "Were these dishes ever washed?" he asked his hostess, running his fingers over the grit and grime.

She replied,"They're as clean as soap and water could get them". He felt a bit uncomfortable, but blessed the food anyway and started eating. It was really delicious and he said so, despite the dirty dishes. When dinner was over, the hostess took the dishes outside and yelled, "Here Soap! Here Water!"

Have any structures mentioned in the Bible been discovered?

Yes, quite a number of Biblical structures have been excavated. Some of the most interesting are the following:

*The palace at Jericho where Eglon, king of Moab, was assassinated by Ehud (Judges 3:15-30).

  • The east gate of Shechem where Gaal and Zebul watched the forces of Abimelech approach the city (Judges 9:34-38).
  • The Temple of Baal/El-Berith in Shechem, where funds were obtained to finance Abimelech's kingship, and where the citizens of Shechem took refuge when Abimelech attacked the city (Judges 9:4, 46-49).
  • The pool of Gibeon where the forces of David and Ishbosheth fought during the struggle for the kingship of Israel (2 Samuel 2:12-32).
  • The Pool of Heshbon, likened to the eyes of the Shulammite woman (Song of Songs 7:4).
  • The royal palace at Samaria where the kings of Israel lived (1 Kings 20:43; 21:1, 2; 22:39; 2 Kings 1:2; 15:25).
  • The Pool of Samaria where King Ahab's chariot was washed after his death (1 Kings 22:29-38).
  • The water tunnel beneath Jerusalem dug by King Hezekiah to provide water during the Assyrian siege (2 Kings 20:20; 2 Chronicles 32:30).
  • The royal palace in Babylon where King Belshazzar held the feast and Daniel interpreted the handwriting on the wall (Daniel 5).
  • The royal palace in Susa where Esther was queen of the Persian king Xerxes (Esther 1:2; 2:3, 5, 9, 16).
  • The royal gate at Susa where Mordecai, Esther's cousin, sat (Esther 2:19, 21; 3:2, 3; 4:2; 5:9, 13; 6:10, 12).
  • The Square in front of the royal gate at Susa where Mordecai met with Halthach, Xerxes' eunuch (Esther 4:6).
  • The foundation of the synagogue at Capernaum where Jesus cured a man with an unclean spirit (Mark 1:21-28) and delivered the sermon on the bread of life (John 6:25-59).
  • The house of Peter at Capernaum where Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law and others (Matthew 8:14-16).
  • Jacob's well where Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman (John 4).
  • The Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, where Jesus healed a crippled man (John 5:1-14).
  • The Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem, where Jesus healed a blind man (John 9:1-4).
  • The tribunal at Corinth where Paul was tried (Acts 18:12-17).
  • The theater at Ephesus where the riot of silversmiths occurred (Acts 19:29).
  • Herod's palace at Caesarea where Paul was kept under guard (Acts 23:33-35).

Cheers

Cheerfulness removes the rust from the mind, lubricates our inward machinery, and enables us to do our work with fewer creaks and groans. If people were universally cheerful, probably there wouldn't be half the quarreling or a tenth part of the wickedness there is. Cheerfulness, too, promotes health and immortality. Cheerful people live longest here on earth, afterward in our hearts. ~Anonymous~

All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast.

4.      On man he has taught “Within me is a God-man…The Spirit man within me is a God-man…I’m a God-man.”16) “Are you a child of God? Then you are divine!...Then you’re not human.” “When you say I am a Christian, you are saying ‘I am messiah in Hebrew.‘I am a little messiah walking earth.” “You know what your last name is? Jehovah! So I’m Benny Jehovah!”  "Though we are not Almighty God Himself, nevertheless, we are now divine." (Benny Hinn, TBN, 12/1/90)

5.       Let's say, 'I AM A GOD-MAN.' …This spirit man within me is a God-Man. …Say 'I'm born-of-heaven-God-Man. I'm a God-Man. I'm a sample of Jesus. I'm a super being." (Praise the Lord, TBN, Dec 6 1990).

Why would God have to die to save people from Himself?

Why would God have to die to save people from Himself?  Because there is no other way to save anyone from their sins.
Because God is holy and righteous, He must punish anyone who breaks His law.  Since He is the one who administers the punishment, we then need to be saved from His righteous judgment.  But, since we are not capable of pleasing God by our mere works, the only one left who can cleanse us is God Himself.
The one offended is the one who must pardon.  If I offend you, I do not ask forgiveness from your neighbor.  I have to ask you.  The same goes with God.  If we sin against Him we have to go to Him to be forgiven.  But, simply asking for forgiveness isn't enough.  The reason is because when we sin, we sin against a holy and infinite God.  But, God is also righteous and He must do what is right.  Therefore, it is right to punish those who defy Him.  But the problem is that since God is infinite and we are not, we cannot do enough to please an infinite God.

Matthew

The early church unanimously held that the gospel of Matthew was the first written gospel and was penned by the apostle of the same name (Matt. 10:2).  Lately, the priority of Matthew as the first written gospel has come under suspicion with Mark being considered by many to be the first written gospel.  The debate is far from over.
The historian Papias mentions that the gospel of Matthew was originally in Aramaic or Hebrew and attributes the gospel to Matthew the apostle.5                                                                                                                                             "Irenaeus (ca. a.d. 180) continued Papias’s views about Matthew and Mark and added his belief that Luke, the follower of Paul, put down in a book the gospel preached by that apostle, and that John, the Beloved Disciple, published his Gospel while residing in Asia. By the time of Irenaeus, Acts was also linked with Luke, the companion of Paul."6                                                 This would mean that if Matthew did write in Aramaic originally, that he may have used Mark as a map, adding and clarifying certain events as he remembered them.  But, this is not known for sure.
The earliest quotation of Matthew is found in Ignatius who died around 115 A.D.  Therefore, Matthew was in circulation well before Ignatius came on the scene.  The various dates most widely held as possible writing dates of the Gospel are between A.D. 40 - 140.  But Ignatius died around 115 A.D. and he quoted Matthew.  Therefore Matthew had to be written before he died.  Nevertheless, it is generally believed that Matthew was written before A.D. 70 and as early as A.D. 50.

FRED’S VIEW -  Was the Crucifixion necessary?

There are some “Christians” today who believe that there are other ways to Heaven. This is not only very prevalent in the Liberal churches where very little of the Bible is taken seriously but can also be found in Bible believing churches as well.

The reason for this belief in most cases is a lack of knowledge of the Scripture or a reliance on someone else’s interpretation. How sad that some would believe another’s religious agenda without checking it out with the creditableness of the Bible. With out the Bible we are just floundering around with man’s ideas. Our Christian faith, no matter which denomination, was originally Bible based but man’s ideas have perverted it and this has lead to many believing false teachings.

If there are other ways to Heaven then Jesus should not have bothered. He wasted His life and the whole meaning of His coming in the first place. The Bible says that He came for the “WHOLE” world out of love! John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Like it or not we have to realize that Jesus is the only way to Heaven and all else is false teaching.

Are you one of the deceived? If you can’t accept the Crucifixion as the ONLY way to Heaven stop calling yourself a Christian because you are not following God’s Words! Fred

RIBS?

Sometimes women are overly suspicious of their husbands.

When Adam stayed out very late for a few nights, Eve became upset.

"You're running around with other women," she charged.

"You're being unreasonable," Adam responded. "You're the only woman on earth."

The quarrel continued until Adam fell asleep, only to be awakened by someone poking him in the chest. It was Eve.

"What do you think you're doing?" Adam demanded.

"Counting your ribs," said Eve.

FALSE TEACHER                                                                                                                    Frederick Price states, “The Bible says that He [Jesus] had a treasurer-a treasury they called it “the bag”); that they had one man who was the treasurer, named Judas Iscariot; and the rascal was stealing out of the bag for three-and-a-half years and nobody knew that he was stealing. You know why? Because there was so much in it, He couldn't tell. Nobody could tell that anything was missing. If He had three oranges in the bottom of the bag and he stole two of them, don't tell me He wouldn't know that some was missing. Beside that, if Jesus didn't have anything, what do you need a treasury for? A treasury is for surplus. It's not for that which you're spending. It's only for surplus-to hold it until you need to spend it. Therefore, He must have had a whole lot that needed to be held in advance that He wasn't spending. So He must have had more than He was living on.” (“Ever Increasing Faith” program TBN Nov.23, 1990)

Does Genesis 1 Contradict Genesis 2?

There is actually no contradiction between the accounts of Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. The best way to understand the creation story is to see Genesis chapter one as an overview of all God did to create the heavens and the earth. In chapter two, the story zooms in to look at day six and study those events in a more detailed fashion.

It's a technique of storytelling used even today by many movies. The film will start by saying something like "This is a story of two people. They met and fell in love. But then they lost each other. But after a while they finally found their way back to true love again. How they did so is the beginning of our story..." The movie will then show exactly how that all takes place.

The creation of man is written in the same way. Genesis 1:26-27 says, "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.' God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them."

Once we get to chapter two, verse four we read, "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. Now no shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, for the LORD God had not sent rain upon the earth, and there was no man to cultivate the ground. But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. Then the LORD God formed man of (8) dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being."

As you can see, verse four is a transitional verse. It starts, "This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created..." much like the "How they did so is the beginning of our story..." line above. Chapter two talks about God planting a garden toward the East - and growing plants there. This doesn't mean that there weren't plants in other parts of the world; it just means the focus of the story has shifted to man and his situation now. www.comereason.org

Concentrate on this Sentence

To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.  When God takes something from your grasp, He's not punishing you, but merely opening your hands to receive something better. The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.

If God Created Everything, Who Created God?
by Rich Deem

Who created God? It is an age-old question that has plagued all those who like to think about the big questions. Having grown up as an agnostic non-Christian, it provided me with a potential reason why there might not be any god. Various religions tend to solve the problem in different ways. The LDS church (Mormonism) says that the God (Elohim) to whom we are accountable had a father god, then grew up on a planet as a man, and progressed to become a god himself. Many other religions have claimed that gods beget other gods. Of course the problem with this idea is how did the first god get here? This problem of infinite regression invalidates such religions. Christianity claims that God has always existed. Is this idea even possible? Does science address such issues?

Christianity's answer

Christianity answers the question of who created God in the very first verse of the very first book, Genesis: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1)

This verse tells us that God was acting before time when He created the universe. Many other verses from the New Testament tells us that God was acting before time began, and so, He created time, along with the other dimensions of our universe:

·         No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. (1 Corinthians 2:7)

·         This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time (2 Timothy 1:9)

·         The hope of eternal life, which God... promised before the beginning of time (Titus 1:2)

·         To the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen. (Jude 1:25)

·         God has no need to have been created, since He exists either outside time (where cause and effect do not operate) or within multiple dimensions of time (such that there is no beginning of God's plane of time). Hence God is eternal, having never been created.                                                                          -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Is the unborn baby human yet?

Some people say an abortion is all right because you are not killing a living baby. They say the baby is not human until birth or until it is a certain age, and you are only removing unwanted tissue when you have an abortion.

Look at the footprint at right, from a baby girl who accidentally died in her mother's womb at 19 weeks old. The footprint is only 25 millimeters, or one inch, yet you can clearly see the foot is shaped normally with all the toes already formed. This is from a real baby — and real babies are what grow in the mother's womb from the moment of conception.

Recent technology and microphotography have shown that the baby is a growing, living human right from the earliest stage. From the moment of conception you have all your genes and chromosomes, and all the “information” you need to direct your development.

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." (Billy - age 4 )

"Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other." (Karl - age 5 )

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." (Terri - age 4 )

FRED’S VIEW – WHAT IS SIN?

“And the men instead of having a normal sex relationship with women burned with lust for each other, men doing shameful things with other men and as a result, getting paid with their own souls with the penalty they so richly deserved.

So it was that they gave God up and would not acknowledge Him, God gave them up to doing everything their evil minds could think of. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness and sin, of greed and hate, envy, murder, fighting, lying, bitterness, and gossip. They were backbiters, haters of God, insolent, proud braggarts, always thinking of new ways of sinning and continually being disobedient to parents. They tried to misunderstand, broke their promises, and were heartless – without pity.

They were fully aware of God’s death penalty for these crimes, yet they went right ahead and did them anyway, and encouraged others to do them too.”  Romans 1:27- 32

“Don’t you know that those doing such things have no share in the Kingdom of God? Don’t fool yourselves. Those who live immoral lives, who are idol worshipers, adulterers or homosexuals – will have no share in His Kingdom. Neither will thieves or greedy people, drunkards, slanderers, or robbers.

There was a time when some of you were just like that but now your sins are washed away, and you are set apart for God, and He has accepted you because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God have done for you.” 1 Cor. 6: 9, 10.

“But when you follow your own wrong inclinations your lives will produce these evil results: impure thoughts, eagerness for lustful pleasure, idolatry, spiritism (that is encouraging the activity of demons), hatred and fighting, jealousy and anger, constant effort to get the best for yourself, complaints and criticisms, the feeling that everyone else is wrong except those in your own little group – and there will be wrong doctrine, envy, murder, drunkenness, wild parties and all that sort of thing. Let me tell you again as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.” Galatians 5: 9, 10

“But cowards who turn back from following me, and those who are unfaithful to me, and the corrupt, and murderers, and the immoral, and those conversing with demons, and idol worshipers and all liars – their doom id in the Lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the Second Death.”  Rev. 21: 8

“Outside the city are those who have strayed from God, and the sorcerers and the immoral and murderers, and idolaters, and all who love to lie and do so.”  Rev. 22: 15

What happened to the demons in Mark 5?

He said he had a legion, meaning literally several thousand. This was probably a figure of speech, but he doubtless had many demons. The demons begged not to be sent out of the country; Christ then sent them into some pigs grazing on a nearby mountainside, and the pigs ran over the cliff into the sea. This is more evidence of Christ's total control over the demonic world.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What were pigs doing in Israel?

The Jews according to Old Testament Law forbid them from eating pork but let’s remember that the Roman Empire was in control of Israel at that time and their soldiers were permitted to eat pork.

A Rare Book

A collector of rare books ran into an acquaintance who told him he had just thrown away an old Bible that he found in a dusty, old box. He happened to mention that Guten-somebody-or-other had printed it.
   "Not Gutenberg?" Gasped the collector.
"Yes, that was it!" "You idiot! You've thrown away one of the first books ever printed. A copy recently sold at an auction for half a million dollars!"
"Oh, I don't think this book would have been worth anything close to that much," replied the man. "It was scribbled all over in the margins by some guy named Martin Luther."

Evidence about Jesus from Pliny the Younger

An important source of evidence about Jesus and early Christianity can be found in the letters of Pliny the Younger to Emperor Trajan. Pliny was the Roman governor of Bithynia in Asia Minor. In one of his letters, dated around A.D. 112, he asks Trajan's advice about the appropriate way to conduct legal proceedings against those accused of being Christians. Pliny says that he needed to consult the emperor about this issue because a great multitude of every age, class, and sex stood accused of Christianity. At one point in his letter, Pliny relates some of the information he has learned about these Christians:

They were in the habit of meeting on a certain fixed day before it was light, when they sang in alternate verses a hymn to Christ, as to a god, and bound themselves by a solemn oath, not to any wicked deeds, but never to commit any fraud, theft or adultery, never to falsify their word, nor deny a trust when they should be called upon to deliver it up; after which it was their custom to separate, and then reassemble to partake of food--but food of an ordinary and innocent kind. Pliny, Letters, transl. by William Melmoth, rev. by W.M.L. Hutchinson (Cambridge: Harvard Univ. Press, 1935), vol. II, X:96, cited in Habermas, The Historical Jesus, 199.                                                                                                                               ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Apocalypse

From the Greek word for "revelation," or "unveiling."  It is synonymous with Armageddon and refers to those future things dealing with the return of Christ and the great battle of Armageddon.

Redemption

Redemption means to free someone from bondage. It often involves the paying of a ransom, a price that makes redemption possible. The Israelites were redeemed from Egypt. We were redeemed from the power of sin and the curse of the Law (Gal. 3:13) through Jesus (Rom. 3:24; Col. 1:14). We were bought with a price (1 Cor. 6:20; 7:23).

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it. -Ronald Reagan (1986)

Why couldn't Jesus do miracles in His hometown (Mark 6:4-5)?

In Mark 6:4-5 Jesus affirmed that a prophet is without honor in his home town, and in view of that reality, He could not perform any miracles in Nazareth except for healing a few sick people. The people of Nazareth were apparently plagued by unbelief and paid little attention to the claims of Jesus.

At first glance, one might get the impression that Jesus' miraculous power was utterly dependent upon peoples' faith in order for it to work. That is not the meaning of this verse, however. It is not that Jesus was unable or incapacitated in performing a miracle in Nazareth. (Remember -- Jesus is the sovereign Creator of the entire universe according to John 1:3, Hebrews 1:2, and Colossians 1:16). Rather, Jesus "could not" do miracles there in the sense that He WOULD NOT do so in view of the pervasive unbelief in that city.

Miracles serve a far greater purpose, from the divine perspective, than just providing a raw display of power. Indeed, Jesus' miraculous deeds are often called "signs" in the New Testament because they serve to signify His identity as the Messiah. Since the people of Nazareth had already made up their minds against Jesus, and had provided more than ample evidence of their lack of faith in Him, Jesus chose not to engage in miraculous acts there except for a few healings of sick people. He refused to bestow miraculous deeds on a city that had rejected the miraculous Messiah. Unbelief excluded the people of Nazareth from the dynamic disclosure of God's grace that others had experienced.

Because of Nazareth's rejection of the person and message of Jesus Christ, He went on to other cities that did respond to and receive Him. We have no evidence that Jesus ever again returned to Nazarethwww.ronrhodes.org

MUSLIM WRITINGS

JIHAD – holy war commanded in the Qur’an to be fought perpetually against all peoples until all the world submits [ISLAM means submission] to Allah as the only god and to Muhammad as his messenger.

5 SURAH - chapter and verse in the Qur’an.

6 QUR’AN - Islam’s bible – Compilation by Uthman ibn Affan, third Caliph to succeed Muhammad, of revelations Muhammad allegedly received from Allah through the angel Gabriel—except for those parts lost or inaccurately remembered.

7 HADITH - sayings and deeds of Muhammad as reported by his closest companions. Considered to be as author-itative as the Qur’an, which cannot be understood without them.

8 ALLAH – Contraction of Al-ilah (al is “the”, ilah is “god”). Meaning the chief among some 360 idols in the Ka’aba, located in Mecca. Allah is the moon god worshipped by pagan Arab tribes long before Muhammad was born.

The last day will not come until the Muslims confront the Jews and the Muslims destroy them. In that day Allah will give a voice to the rocks and the trees and they will cry out, “O Muslim, O Abdullah, there is a Jew hiding behind me. Come and kill him!”9 [ Sahih Al-Bukhari’s hadith see page 12].

Does 1 Peter 3 Mandate Baptism?

1 Peter 3:21 reads "And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience - through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." Notice when you look at the entire verse that Peter specifically states he is not talking about the act of water baptism. He is talking about regeneration based on "an appeal to God." In other words, one is spiritually baptized into the body of Christ when they ask Him to forgive them of their sins. The difficulty in these passages comes from the fact that water baptism generally happened at the time of salvation. It then becomes hard to distinguish the differences between the two. However, because they are recorded as being contiguous in most of the book of Acts doesn't mean they are the same thing at all. Because women perspire while giving birth does not mean that it is necessary to perspire for birth to occur. You see, baptism is an act of identification with a person, group or cause. This was well understood in the days of the disciples, for many Greek cults also had baptisms, as did John the Baptist. Like receiving a diploma at a graduation ceremony signifies that one has completed all his required study appropriately, baptism is a sign to others that a change has occurred. The ceremony does not make one a graduate, but is an outward display of what has already happened.                                                                                            This is such an important issue because it asks if Christ alone saves us or if it is Christ plus baptism. The Bible is ardently clear on this point: nothing other than the finished work of Christ is responsible for our salvation. It is entirely God's doing. To say that I help to save myself is heretical at the least. www.comereason.org

                  A NEWSLETTER FOR CHRISTIANS

“God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but to save it.” John 3:17

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITOR’S NOTE –

Thanks again to all who have written with questions and comments. Also a special prayer to those who have been sending us financial support. You are blessing people around the world. Recently I had a request from someone to remove their name from the mailing list because they felt bad that they could not send help and they enjoyed the newsletter so much. My response was that God instructed me to send this newsletter until He told me to stop and that it had to be free but He would supply the finances so I would not remove their name or any one else’s for lack of funding on their part. I asked for their prayers, as I do for everyone reading this and as always I ask those who can help to please pray about giving before sending anything and never send us finances that should go to your own church. Thanks and God Bless. Fred

FRED’S VIEW -  CREATION OR CREATOR?

Have you taken the time to notice how the world seemed to come alive after the winter months when everything was in hibernation? The trees, flowers, and the birds are all newly alive. The Bible tells us that we can know that there is a God just by looking around at the things of nature. His creation is awesome!
I recently read some articles on a Buddhist and a Hindu web site. How many of you know that they believe that God is in everything? Plants, rocks, animals etc. They express worship to all of these things, kind of like the people of the world who worship the sun, moon, trees, etc.
Why would they overlook the Creator and worship the creation? As I mentioned in the beginning of this article that we can know that there is a God just by looking around us. (Romans 1) These things are from the hand of God BUT they are not God!
"Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man - and birds and four footed animals and creeping things." (Romans 1:22-23)
I wonder, as Christians, if we sometimes worship the creation instead of the Creator? Have you ever put the pleasure of the outdoors before the one who created it all? We claim that we are not pagans so shouldn't we put the worship of our Creator God first, especially on our day of worship? Maybe the above verse could include the beach, boating and fishing. Who comes first in our lives the creation or the Creator? Fred

Nebo-Sarsekim Found in Babylonian Tablet

This article was first published in the Summer 2007 issue of Bible and Spade.  www.biblearchaeology.org

Nebo who? You mean you don’t remember Nebo-Sarsekim? No wonder, because if you consult your concordance, you will find that he is referred to but once in the Old Testament. Nebo-Sarsekim was a high Babylonian official named in Jeremiah 39:3. The mention of this individual in the Hebrew Bible is yet another example of an obscure “factoid” which demonstrates the historical accuracy and eyewitness nature of the Biblical record.

The time was the ninth day of the fourth month of the 11th year of the reign of Zedekiah (Jer 39:2), i.e., July 18, 587 BC. The place was Jerusalem. The event was the fall of Jerusalem and the Southern Kingdom of Judah to the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar after a siege of two and a half years, a very sad time in the history of God’s people. After the city wall was broken through, all the officials of the king of Babylon came and took seats in the Middle Gate: Nergal-Sharezer of Samgar, Nebo-Sarsekim a chief officer, Nergal-Sharezer a high official and all the other officials of the king of Babylon (Jer 39:3).

The tablet mentioning Nebo-Sarsekim was found in Sippar, an ancient Babylonian city 20 mi (32 km) southwest of modern Baghdad and 35 mi (57 km) north of Babylon. In the late 19th century, tens of thousands of cuneiform tablets were recovered from the site and brought to the British Museum (Gasche and Janssen 1997). Later, in 1920, the Nebo-Sarsekim tablet, only 2.13 in (5.5 cm) wide, from the same site, was acquired by the museum. Credit: Ian Jones/Telegraph

Geology.1    by Henry B. Smith Jr. MA

Clearly, if the Flood of Noah’s day was a recent and worldwide event, it would have drastically affected the topography and geology of the entire planet. Major geological structures and topography are much better explained by recent catastrophism, not slow processes over eons of time. Mountain formation, ocean floor topography, plate tectonics, river valleys, volcanism, canyon formation, the formation of coal deposits, lakes and a plethora of other geologic features are dramatically impacted by the reality of a recent, cataclysmic Flood. The formation of these and many other structures will be misunderstood if not interpreted via a young earth/Flood model, a framework that the Bible plainly presents in its teaching. The dogma of uniformitarianism dominates all current paradigms, so the Flood is rejected out of hand. Additionally, the Flood is a very plausible triggering mechanism for the Ice Age, which required a set of unique and simultaneous circumstances unexplainable by uniformitarian principles.

Jesus accepts the title of God

One of the least favorite exchanges in the Bible from the cults perspective is the one that occurred between Jesus and Thomas after Jesus rose from the dead. Thomas, the ever-skeptical disciple, was unconvinced that Jesus had risen from the dead and wanted to see direct proof. However, when the Lord Jesus appeared to him, his only reaction was "My Lord and my God!"

Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." (John 20:28-29)

What was Jesus' reaction to the title of God? Did Jesus rebuke him for calling Him "God"? No! In fact, Jesus praised Thomas for his belief. And the belief that Thomas exhibited was that Jesus was Lord and God. If Jesus were not God, accepting such a statement for truth would be a grievous sin. Either Jesus is God or He would have to be a sinner!

Is Hell Unfair?

                                                        by Walter Martin

What happens to people who have never heard the name of Jesus?  Is God unfair to send them to hell simply because they never had the opportunity to hear the gospel?  The Bible doesn’t see it that way:  “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse . . .” (Romans 1:20-21).

God doesn’t send men to hell because they haven’t heard the name of Jesus.  We have no way of knowing how God communicates with people.  Surely, the gospel went out from Jerusalem and Judea to the uttermost parts of the earth.  God obviously had to consider the fact that there were no jet airplanes, no modern means of transportation, and that people on the other side of the earth could hardly be charged in the same category with people who were right there in Jerusalem.  So, he must have had a plan for dealing with them.  The Judge of the whole earth will do what is right.

He sent us into the world to preach the gospel so that men might be saved; that does not mean God doesn’t take into consideration the fact that people—through no fault of their own—have not heard the gospel.  I think that particular truth is very clearly taught in Romans 1, which goes on to say how God reveals Himself to them.  (Don’t ask me exactly how, because I don’t know.)                    Pieces - Life is a well structured game; we're not the players, we're the pieces.

Saint Valentine- Numerous early Christian martyrs were named Valentine. Until 1969, the Catholic Church formally recognized eleven Valentine's Days. The Valentines honored on February 14 are Valentine of Rome (Valentinus presb. m. Romae) and Valentine of Terni (Valentinus ep. Interamnensis m. Romae).

Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome who suffered martyrdom about AD 269 and was buried on the Via Flaminia. His relics are at the Church of Saint Praxed in Rome and at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church in Dublin, Ireland.

Valentine of Terni became bishop of Interamna (modern Terni) about AD 197 and is said to have been killed during the persecution of Emperor Aurelian. He is also buried on the Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine of Rome. His relics are at the Basilica of Saint Valentine in Terni (Basilica di San Valentino).

ANOTHER VALENTINE LEDGEND!

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine's death or burial -- which probably occurred around 270 A.D -- others claim that the Christian church may have decided to celebrate Valentine's feast day in the middle of February in an effort to 'Christianize' celebrations of the pagan Lupercalia festival. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors. Lupercalia, which began at the ides of February, February 15, was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

FRED’S VIEW –  What does your church teach?

Recently while speaking to a group of people the subject of what church we each attended came up. We had a Lutheran, Baptist, Roman Catholic and me, a Pentecostal. We started comparing our beliefs and I was very concerned that some didn’t know what their church believed about many important subjects. This reminded me of the years I spent in a church before my Born Again experience. I couldn’t have answered many of the questions that we posed to each other either.

Do we really know what we believe and most importantly do we understand why we believe what we claim? Many people just continue in a church because their family always attended that particular church or because someone invited us. Shouldn’t we understand what any particular church teaches before we hang our hat there? I’m sure many unaware people started out very innocently by attending the church (cult) started by Jim Jones many years ago because they liked Jim Jones or the people or music they shared but if you remember they all ended up committing suicide because their leader told them to.

Don’t run after a great speaker or charismatic personality or a group of people that make you feel good. Christianity is not built on “feel good” or a seemingly nice person or building, it is built on God’s Word, the Bible and on Jesus Christ.

We as Christians have to know what God’s Word says and we must have a personal relationship with Jesus if we are to have the wisdom of the Holy Spirit guiding us in what we should and should not believe. Remember, Satan was a good talker and appeared to be trustworthy but Eve was deceived by his words.  Fred

For fiscal year 2006 – 2007, the abortion provider earned more than a BILLION dollars and performed 289,750 abortions, an increase of 24,807 from the previous year.

BE CAREFULL!

“Many tender-minded Christians fear to sin against love by daring to inquire into anything that comes wearing the cloak of Christianity and breathing the name of Jesus. They dare not examine the credentials of the latest prophet to hit their town lest they be guilty of rejecting something which may be of God. They timidly remember how the Pharisees refused to accept Christ when He came, and they do not want to be caught in the same snare, so they either reserve judgment or shut their eyes and accept everything without question. This is supposed to indicate a high degree of spirituality. But in sober fact it indicates no such thing. It may indeed be evidence of the absence of the Holy Spirit. - AW Tozer

The quote above from noted theologian AW Tozer succinctly describes the unfortunate posture of Christianity today. In the Apostle John’s epistle recalling the fundamentals of our faith (or calling for a return to the basics of Christianity), he wrote:

1 John 4:1-2 (New American Standard Bible)

1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

Unfortunately, many Christians (and those who erroneously think that they are Christians) simply apply the “if it makes me tingle, then it must be the Holy Spirit” model of interpretation when dealing with these demonic charlatans and their revivals see-through shows.

What is Heresy?

Heresy can be defined as any departure from Christian orthodoxy which is a teaching, doctrine or practice that goes beyond the apostles teachings -- the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints (Jude 1:3).Biblical heresy is often a denial of the core beliefs held in the Church that are founded on the Bible. In this sense it applies to groups which reject basic Christian doctrines and separate themselves from the historic church.

It can be defined as the over-emphasis of a neglected truth or a truth elevated to an extreme were it can no longer be recognized as biblical. Heresy can also originate from a new revelation or prophesy, which is often the most dangerous source of all. A divisive teaching or practice from inside the Church can be more destructive to genuine faith than one from the outside. The epistle of Jude warns of this. letusreason.org

Things That It Took Me 50 Years To Learn

When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command.  Very often, that individual is crazy!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who Is God - Father God or Mother Nature?
Who is God? What has He revealed about Himself? To begin with, whenever He refers to Himself in parental terms, He always addresses Himself as "Father," never "Mother." He calls Himself "a Father to Israel," and in one instance, when His "children" were particularly disrespectful to Him, He said to them, "A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am the Father, where is My honor? And if I am a Master, where is My reverence?"

His prophets acknowledged Him as Father by saying, "You are our Father, we are the clay, and You our potter; And all of us are the work of Your hand," and "do we not all have one Father? Has not one God created us?" Never once does God refer to Himself as "Mother" and never once is He called such by the prophets to whom He spoke. Calling God "Mother Nature" is comparable to calling your earthly father "Mom."

PUNISH?                                                                                                               Yes, God must punish those who break His law because it is the right thing to do.  Just as a parent should punish a child for doing something wrong (intentionally), so God must punish those who do wrong.  You see, if God did not punish the person who does wrong, then He would be unjust and unrighteous.  He would be breaking His own law -- which He cannot do.  But, someone might say that the punishment of a parent on a child is temporary whereas God's punishment is eternal.  Why the difference?  The answer is two fold.  First, God is infinite and a parent is not.  Second, God is the standard of all righteousness and the parent is not.
Because God is infinite, when we sin, we are offending an infinite God.  This is incredibly significant.  The reason sin is so bad is not so much because of the one committing the sin, but because of the One who is offended.  In other words, sin is so incredibly bad because it takes on a horrible quality by the very fact of who it is against: an infinitely pure, holy, and righteous God.
A parent is not the standard of righteousness.  God is.  A parent is (or should be) using the righteous standard of God in raising children.  Therefore, though a parent's punishment is temporary because it is instruction and correction, the punishment of God is eternal because our sin is against an eternal God.  There is a big difference.

My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE - "If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way."

FRED’S VIEW – Give yourself a gift!

After the craziness of the Christmas season culminates with the opening of gifts on Christmas morning we all just let out a sigh of relief because all of our running around is over except for the returns. Do you realize that we Christians have allowed the secular world to steal our sacred day of welcoming our Savior into the world? What in the world does, Santa Claus, red nosed reindeer or Jingle Bells have to do with the simplicity of our Lord’s birth? Bah, humbug!

I don’t believe the Grinch stole Christmas. I believe that the devil and his followers used very subtle ways to distract us from the true meaning of the day. How many “Christians” only go to church on Christmas and Easter? What happened to our beliefs? What are we showing our children about God when all they hear at this time of the year is, ‘You better be good, you better not cry etc.’

Why not take time out from the secular Christmas and find a quiet place to read the Christmas account in Scripture and really dwell on its meaning and then quietly thank our Father God for His provision of Salvation through His Son, Jesus. God gave us a gift why not spend time in His presence?

HAVE YOU EVER PRAYED THIS PRAYER?

“Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn from my past sinful life toward You. Please, forgive me, and help me to avoid sinning again. I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and to reign in my heart from this day forward. Please, send your Holy Spirit to help me to obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life.”

Christmas Traditions and Paganism by Russ Wise

The time and season of Jesus’ birth is largely unknown. The exact date is definitely unknown. There is much about Jesus’ birth that has been lost in antiquity. However, there is a good deal that we do know and it is available in Scripture.

The time of Jesus’ birth has been celebrated at numerous times throughout the year. In light of the biblical account it is likely that He was born in a more moderate season rather than that of winter (December 25th). So the question remains, How did December 25th come to be celebrated as the birth date of Christ?

The early church chose December 25th as the date for Jesus’ birth because it coincided with several pagan festivals. New converts in the 4th century who had embraced Christianity were experiencing discrimination for not celebrating Saturnalia and Kalends. Saturnalia was observed for a week beginning December 17th and honored the Roman god, Saturn. The celebration coincided with the winter solstice and was widely attended. Kalends was observed on January 1st when the new Roman consuls began their time in office. The festivities that accompanied Kalends were much like those that mark our Christmas celebrations. The Romans saved their meager incomes throughout the year so they could indulge in great feasts and lavish themselves and others with gifts.

These pagan celebrations were seen as an opportunity to give hope to mankind for the produce grown in the coming seasons. Saturnalia was a religious feast that offered individuals a chance to share gifts of candles, clay images, and charms that signaled the coming end of winter and the warmth brought by the sun.

The Roman Church saw a need to change the traditional observances to one that would bring a more positive reflection of the times and offer new converts cover for not observing the pagan festivities. December 25th was particularly fitting in that the date fell during Saturnalia and the winter solstice. The celebration of Jesus’ birth on the 25th would be an attempt to re-focus the Roman observance to one that celebrated the coming of the Light of the World rather than the light and warmth of the Sun. Jesus’ birth brought mankind a triumph of light over darkness and life over death.

The early Christian church co-opted many of the pagan celebrations of the day to ensure that Christianity would be received by the masses. The traditions that accompany Christmas are by and large from pagan sources. Mistletoe was sacred to the Druids, Christmas carols had a secular beginning, Christmas wreaths were a pagan symbol of fertility and life, and seen earlier – gift exchanges came from pagan sources as well. However, the observance of Jesus’ birth is not realized in the trappings of Christmas celebrations. His new birth in us, as Christians, is to be realized each day.

We may not know for certain when Jesus came to us as a new-born babe. But we do know that we are to celebrate His life, death, and resurrection each day as we live our lives for Him. The day of our celebration is inconsequential; the fact that we observe Christ’s coming and His Lordship in our lives is crucial to our salvation. It is not the observance of tradition that makes us worthy, although tradition is useful. “It” is the witness of a life totally given each day to one’s Savior that brings Glory to our Creator.

Author's Comments:
The precise date of Jesus' birth is unknown and because of this lack of knowing many Christians have chosen not to celebrate His birth on December 25th. Our response should not be to disregard a worthy celebration. But to live our lives as if each day was the day of His coming. By doing so, then it would not be a concern which day one celebrated Jesus' birth. Because we live each day accordingly with joy in our lives celebrating His glorious coming.

A BILLION PROBLEMS WITH THE BIG BANG

The big bang model not only contradicts Scripture (Genesis 1 reveals the earth originated before the sun), but astronomers keep finding other problems.

One recent problem is that the galaxies in relatively “young” parts of the universe are to large for their age. Evolutionary astrophysicists are puzzled how the galaxies grew so large so quickly. Will this cause them to rethink their model? That’s not how it works. Modern secular scientists are committed to their model, and they will attempt to explain away the exceptions (or shrug them off). SWISS MIX

The largest dinosaur grave in Europe has been unearthed. The fossils of two plateosaurs have already been found at a construction site in Switzerland. And its estimated that one animal per 100 square meters could be found in this mass grave.

Evolutionists believe that dinosaurs died at least 65 million years ago and their burial was usually gradual. But these dinosaurs were found in a huge grave, strongly suggesting mass burial and quick fossilization. A massive flood – such as the one of Noah’s time about 4,500 years ago – would explain the sudden drowning and burial of so many creatures.www.cnn.com/2007/TECH/science/08/09dinosaur.grave.reut/index.html – ANSWERSMAGAZINE.COM

Some of the major reasons why evolution cannot be true are now presented.

1. Going from a Big Bang to a structured universe, from non-life to life, from simpler life to higher-order life all involve a tremendous increase in complexity. However, it is well-proven that when things are left to themselves, they always become LESS complex (they decay), the opposite of what evolution requires. This is known formally as the Second Law of Thermodynamics. This tendency can only be overcome through the application of DIRECTED energy (such as using your muscles to put together the parts of a bicycle). Evolutionists argue that the sun provided more than enough energy to overcome the Second Law on the primitive earth, which is true, but this was not directed energy. To carry the above bicycle analogy forward, it is like saying that applying a blow torch at random to those bike parts should be enough to put the bike together!

The information content of a person (to describe the structure and operation of a person) is many, many times that of a bacterium (which is also far from simple), yet the field of Information Theory has shown that information, such as the coded programs in the biological cell, NEVER arises as a result of random, chance processes like those at the core of evolution.

2. The mechanism of neo-Darwinian evolution, natural selection acting on mutations, is totally inadequate. Almost all known mutations are harmful. The best (only?) "beneficial" mutation cited is sickle cell anemia (it can provide immunity to malaria). Also, natural selection does just what is says. It only "selects" from what is already present - it cannot creat3. The gap from non-life to life is very big. It requires both DNA and RNA to be present, working cooperatively, at the same time. Each of these structures are very complex. To get around this problem evolutionists say the first life may have been RNA-only, but this is pure speculation (and is still a significant problem). To date man has created only the simplest low-level building block of life in the laboratory (most of the amino acids). And if he does create life one day, it will involve the use of complex equipment and well thought out procedures, documenting the necessity for intelligence to make it happen. No "warm little pond" will do!

Christmas Present

It was the day after Christmas at a church in San Francisco. The pastor of the church was looking over the cradle when he noticed that the baby Jesus was missing from among the figures. Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy with a red wagon and in the wagon was the figure of the little infant, Jesus.

So he walked up to the boy and said, "Well, where did you get Him, my fine friend?"

The little boy replied, "I got him from t he church."

"And why did you take him?"

The boy said, "Well, about a week before Christmas I prayed to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me a red wagon for Christmas I would give him a ride around the block in it."

FALSE TEACHERS  - Creflo Dollar states: “I’m telling you, Jesus wasn’t poor, and He didn’t wear no rags, either. Like we march in on these Easter little plays that we do at our church, with those raggedy sheets on. Jesus didn’t have no rags on. He wore designer clothes, honey.” (Creflo Dollar Crusade, Feb. 9, 1999)

Kenneth Copeland adds: “Give $10 and receive $1000; Give $1000 and receive $100,000 … give one house and receive one hundred houses or a house worth one hundred times as much. Give one airplane and receive one hundred times the value of the airplane… In short, Mark 10:30 is a very good deal” (KennethCopeland,God’s Will Is Prosperity, pg. 54)

FRED’S VIEW – Use it or Lose it?

While speaking to an adult Sunday school class I used an analogy taken from the many commercials we see on TV and in the newspapers. Everyone is told that they MUST have a certain product or their life will not be very good. For instance, Ivory soap. It is 99/100% pure. Whatever that means. My grandmother used to make her own soap from animal fat and lye which doesn’t seem to pure to me! And besides being pure this soap would float. That was good because my grandmother’s soap didn’t float and after a day on the farm that bath water turned several different colors and it could be difficult to find the soap. OK, pure and it floats, what else is good about it? It is white, I guess to show how pure it is? The package is a distinctive blue and white in color which is appealing.

Now the question arises, “How can I benefit from this great soap? First I have to purchase it, then I have to wait until shower or bath time to unwrap it and then I have to apply the soap to my body. All of these steps are needed to realize whether this product is as good as it says.

Let’s apply these steps to our Bible. Looks real good on that table, I know it says some great things and has some incredible stories in it. I also seem to recall someone saying that it changed their life.

Isn’t that enough of an advertisement? When will you open it and apply it to your mind and body to experience the joy of the Lord in His own words? Fred

THANKSGIVING AND ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Lincoln's original 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation came - spiritually speaking - at a pivotal point in his life. During the first week of July of that year, the Battle of Gettysburg occurred, resulting in the loss of some 60,000 American lives. Four months later in November, Lincoln delivered his famous "Gettysburg Address." It was while Lincoln was walking among the thousands of graves there at Gettysburg that he committed his life to Christ. As he explained to a friend:

“When I left Springfield [to assume the Presidency] I asked the people to pray for me. I was not a Christian. When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian. But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ.”

Pilgrim Edward Winslow described the Pilgrims' Thanksgiving in these words:

"Our harvest being gotten in, our Governor sent four men on fowling [bird hunting] so that we might, after a special manner, rejoice together after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. They four in one day killed as much fowl as... served the company almost a week... Many of the Indians [came] amongst us and... their greatest King, Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted; and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought... And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet BY THE GOODNESS OF GOD WE ARE... FAR FROM WANT."

HAVE YOU EVER PRAYED THIS PRAYER?

Please, forgive me, and help me to avoid sinning again. I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ, died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. Why do spirit-filled Christians interpret Scripture differently?

Scripture is clear that one of the ministries of the Holy Spirit is to illumine the minds of Christians so they can understand Scripture (1 Corinthians 2:13-14). This being the case, why do spirit-filled Christians sometimes have different understandings as to what certain Bible verses mean?

In answering this question, one might liken the Holy Spirit to a radio station that is transmitting a perfect signal. Even though that radio signal is transmitted perfectly, there are all kinds of different quality radio receivers out there. Some have good reception; some have poor reception. Some have a good antenna; others have a broken antenna. Some have good batteries; others are low on energy. The point is, different radio receivers have varying degrees of success in receiving that perfect signal.

Christians are much the same way. The Holy Spirit's "signal" (that is, His illumination) is always perfect. But because of varying circumstances (perhaps sin, or not fully walking in the Spirit, or being overly concerned about the affairs of the world, or being blinded by Satan), Christians have varying degrees of success in properly receiving the Spirit's illumination. ronrhodes.org/answerquestions

                     BLOODLESS GOSPEL  by Roger Oakland

The gospel of Jesus Christ is not the gospel unless the blood of Jesus was shed. Man can not be saved unless he understands and accepts this, ask for forgiveness of our sins and repent. There are many in the church today who say the gospel is too “bloody” and “offensive” for seekers. Can the gospel be watered down and diluted?

If you attend a seeker-friendly church on a Sunday, it will be rare to see someone carry a Bible. A person with a Bible would be like a fox in a chicken coop – seekers would scatter. It is important that seekers do not feel threatened in any way.

Pastors of seeker-friendly churches say they believe the Bible. But apparently they don’t want seekers to think they take the Bible literally or too seriously. For example, a seeker-friendly pastor would not want to speak on the subject of Genesis and creation because evolutionists attending would be upset. Or a pastor would never mention the consequence of sin is death. This could offend a seeker and they would never come back again.

Bible prophecy or mentioning the end times is also not recommended in seeker-friendly churches. One pastor claims that frightening the church about end times events can make the flock less purpose driven and therefore not as effective as one could be in the present.

The “bloodless gospel” is the product of market-driven church consultants. They say it is important to find out what the seekers are looking for and then provide it. Surveys are done and the church responds. Give the people what they want to hear and feel and they will come.                                     ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Evolution and Racism

An abysmal chapter in the history of evolutionary thought involves the notion that certain races weren't quite as advanced as others. Consider the complete title of Darwin's famous book: "The Origin of Species by Natural Selection" with the subtitle, "The Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life". By this he meant human races as well as animal subspecies.

In the 1800's the scientific community believed that Negroes were lower on the evolutionary chain that Caucasians. Not only were Darwin and Thomas Huxley racists, but virtually all the leading evolutionists and anthropologists - Osborn, Hooton, Hrdlicka, and Haeckel. (Morris 1989, 61, 63) Consider this quote:

"The Negroid stock is even more ancient that the Caucasian and Mongolian, as may be proved by an examination not only of the brain, of the hair, of the body characters, such as teeth, the genitalia, the sense organs, but the instincts, the intelligence. The standard of intelligence of the average adult Negro is similar to that of the eleven-year-old youth of the species Homo Sapiens." (Henry Fairfield Osborn, "The Evolution of Human Races", Natural History Jan/Feb 1926. Reprinted in Natural History 89 (April 1980):129) (Morris, 1989, 62)

H. F. Osborn was the most prominent American anthropologist of the first half of the twentieth century and director of the American Museum of National History. These remarks were not based on innate prejudice, but on the evolutionary science of the day. (Morris, 1989, 62)

The idea that some races had progressed further than others was rationalized by Ernst Haeckel's "recapitulation theory" or "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" where stages of embryonic development express the evolutionary sequence. Here the activities of children (of advanced races) were equated to the activities of adults of the lower races. (Morris 1989, 61, 62)

It should be noted that today anthropologists agree that the different human races have a common origin - a Biblical doctrine. (Morris 1989, 64) emporium.turnpike.net

Glug, Glug!

A church had to hire a new pastor.
Over the protests of one vocal male member a woman was hired as the new senior pastor.
After the new pastor had been there a few weeks, a member of the congregation offered to take the new pastor fishing.
The vocal objector reluctantly agreed to allow them to use his boat and to go along.
The trio got into the boat and motored out on the lake.
When they got ready to fish, they realized that all their tackle had been left on the dock. One of the men commented that they would just have to go back and get it.
The new pastor said that wouldn't be necessary, and she got out of the boat and started walking across the water toward the dock.
The old grouch said, "See I told you we never should have brought her fishing.
She can't even swim!"

The Dual Covenant Error
Posted to Spiritual_Deception for March, 2006

Theological liberals have long taken the position that Jews do not need Jesus. Their argument is that the Jewish people have a separate way of salvation - by grace through faith in God the Father as manifested in their obedience to Torah (the Law of Moses). This viewpoint is known as "Dual Covenant Theology." In other words, God has one covenant for the Jews (the Old Testament) and another for the Gentiles (the New Testament). This view reduces Jesus from a universal Savior to a Savior for the Gentiles only.

The Test of Scripture

Needless to say, this viewpoint is thoroughly un-Biblical. Jesus Himself said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me" (John 14:6). Was Jesus deluded by visions of grandeur or was He God in the flesh proclaiming a fundamental truth?

Peter proclaimed the same truth to none other than the Sanhedrin Council (the highest council of Jewish religious leaders) when he said, "There is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). He had already identified that name as "Jesus Christ the Nazarene" (Acts 4:10).

DID YOU KNOW -

Pope Benedict XVI declares that Scripture is open to holding the Jewish view of Jesus, that Jesus

is not the Son of God. This is precisely why Benedict XVI repeatedly teaches the heresy that Jews

don’t need to believe in Christ for salvation.

Benedict XVI, Zenit News story, Sept. 5, 2000: “[W]e are in agreement that a Jew, and this

is true for believers of other religions, does not need to know or acknowledge Christ as

the Son of God in order to be saved…”

Benedict XVI, God and the World, 2000, pages 150-151: “…their [the Jews] No to Christ

brings the Israelites into conflict with the subsequent acts of God, but at the same time

we know that they are assured of the faithfulness of God. They are not excluded from salv
